For mothers who consumed dairy products during and after pregnancy, eczema in children decreased by about half, according to a study in the British Journal of Dermatology.Colleagues at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology conducted a randomized, double-blind study to compare the effect of dairy products with placebo. Milk products (eg yoghurt, kefir) containing probiotics - bacteria that help digestion - were consumed by mothers from the 36th week of pregnancy until three months after the birth. By the age of two children, the incidence of eczema was approximately 40 percent lower than in the control group.

EkcйmaThe study examined 415 pregnant women and their children, who were randomly divided into two groups: mothers are unaware they are receiving probiotic milk or placebo milk. Children were tested for the occurrence of eczema at two years of age, and the rate in the probiotic group was 40 percent lower or less severe. However, there was no difference between asthma and other allergic diseases.
Christian Kvikne Dotterud, the medical student in the research calls for further research on allergic diseases. The group continues to track children to determine the proportion of allergic patients at six years of age.
